How to check if a Cyprus company is active, struck off or in liquidation
Before you sign a contract, pay an invoice or sue a Cyprus company, confirm that it still exists and what state it is in. The Registrar of Companies records a status for every company, and you can check it free in a few seconds.
Check the status free
Search the company by name (Greek or English) or by its ΗΕ registration number. Each result shows the registration number, the status and any former names. No account is needed.
Searching is free and needs no account. A complete company file costs €20 (the Registrar's €10 fee + €10 to ESearchCy) — and your first credit is free.
What each status means
The registry records the status in Greek. These are the statuses you will meet most often:
| Registry (Greek) | English | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Εγγεγραμμένη | Registered | The company is on the register and legally exists. On its own this does not mean its filings are up to date. |
| Υπό εκκαθάριση | In liquidation | The company is being wound up and a liquidator handles its affairs. Claims are normally made to the liquidator. |
| Διαγράφηκε | Struck off | The Registrar has removed the company from the register, typically for not filing annual returns or paying fees. It no longer exists as a legal person unless it is restored. |
| Διαλύθηκε | Dissolved | The company has been formally dissolved, for example at the end of a liquidation. |
| Διαλύθηκε λόγω συγχώνευσης | Dissolved (merger) | The company merged into another company and ceased to exist. Its business continues in the receiving company. |
| Ανενεργή | Dormant | The registry has the company marked as not active. It still exists on the register. |
| Πτώχευση | Insolvent | Insolvency proceedings are recorded against the company. |
"Registered" is not the whole story
A registered company can still be a risk. The company file shows what the status alone does not:
- Is it keeping up with its filings? Look at the date of the most recent HE32 annual return and filed accounts. A company years behind may be heading for strike-off.
- Who runs it now? Recent HE4 filings show changes of directors or secretary just before a deal, which are worth asking about.
- Are its assets pledged? Registered charges and mortgages (HE24, HE50) show whether lenders have security over the company's property. See our guide to charges.
- Has it changed name? A contract or invoice may use an old name. The search shows former names, so you can confirm it is the same company.
If the company has been struck off
A struck-off company cannot sign contracts or bring claims, and property it owned may pass to the state. Struck-off companies can, in many cases, be restored to the register, either through the Registrar or by application to court, within time limits set by the Companies Law. If you have a claim against, or an interest in, a struck-off company, take legal advice early. The company file will show the last filings before it was struck off.
Frequently asked questions
How can I check if a Cyprus company is still active?
Search it by name or ΗΕ number. The result shows its status at the Registrar of Companies, for example Registered, In liquidation or Struck off. Searching is free and needs no account.
What does "struck off" mean for a Cyprus company?
The Registrar has removed the company from the register, usually for failing to file annual returns or pay fees. It no longer exists as a legal person unless it is restored.
Can a struck-off Cyprus company be restored?
In many cases, yes: through the Registrar or by court application, within the time limits of the Companies Law. Take legal advice for your situation.
Does "Registered" mean the company is in good standing?
Not necessarily. It means the company exists. To see whether it is up to date, check the dates of its latest HE32 annual return and accounts in the company file.
